Welcome to the Feel Good Fuel Weekly Recipes

Introducing myself

Hi, I am Heleen! The author and face behind Feel Good Fuel. I am so excited to start this newsletter and this journey of healthier living together with you. I am a passionate home-cook and nutritionist with a Ph.D. in health and life sciences. My knowledge allows me to distinguish fact from fiction, ensuring that I share reliable information and healthy meal plans.

Growing up in a family that loves cooking, I've adopted the same approach with my own children, involving them in the kitchen and experimenting with various ingredients. I am looking forward to share those experiments and insights with you!

What to expect?

Through the FGF newsletter, I aim to guide you through the world of nutrition, sharing my secret ingredients for meals that benefit both you and your family. I hope to inspire and simplify your meals.

Each week, you can expect:

  • 3 Delicious and Healthy Seasonal Recipes
  • Nutrition Fact of the Week: each week covers a different topic ranging from nutrition facts to meal planning, preparation tip, science and nutrition for kids.
  • Expert Guidance: To make your daily routine smoother.

This being the first newsletter, it's a bit longer than usual and involves a question for you to answer:

When would you prefer to receive your weekly recipes? Let me know which day aligns with your meal planning and shopping routine, and I'll send you the three recipes later this week based on the most popular day.

Part-time vegetarian

For the past six years, I've been a part-time vegetarian. We don’t eat meet at home but make exceptions when we eat out. Cooking vegetarian has enriched my creativity in the kitchen immensely!

I’ll be sharing tasty and varied plant-based recipes, often vegan. Tips for vegans on replacing animal products and for the part-time vegetarians, advice for sometimes combining dishes with fish or meat will be included. I favour seasonal ingredients and I love colourful and diverse meals.

Kids meals

Understanding the challenges of feeding little ones, I'll share how I serve each meal to my kids. While it's not always easy, consistent exposure to for example vegetables increases the likelihood of acceptance. Remember, children may need 8-15 tries before accepting new flavours!

Nutrition fact of this week

Eat the Rainbow: Did you know that the colour of your food says something about the nutrients it contains? The more colours on your plate, the more varied your diet, and the healthier you eat.

This weeks advice: try to eat a variety of colours because each plant pigment has its health benefits. But what does each colour stand for?

This week, I've prepared dishes with mainly seasonal vegetables, each a different colour. Let me share some insights into the colours:

Orange and Yellow: Pumpkin. Rich in vitamin A and C —> Improves immune system, heart, eyes, and skin function.

Green: Broccoli. Rich in vitamin B, C, E, and K —> Enhances eye, teeth, and bone function.

White: Fennel. Rich in vitamin B, C, and K —> Improves heart function and regulates cholesterol.

Red: Tomato. Rich in vitamin A and C —> Enhances heart, memory, and liver function.

Delicious Inspiration for the start of 2024 Dear readers, First of all, I wish you a very happy, healthy, and flavorful 2024. A new year feels like a fresh start, bringing new opportunities. I belief this newsletter is a...
